Disclaimer:
Not all the artists, listed above, are necessarily soul artists in the strictest sense. For example, artist such as Ray Charles could be considered as Blues performers and those like Al Jarreau's are, in fact, more jazz than soul. My definition of soul music, however encompassed Ray Charles and Al Jarreau, as well as artists of similar vains.
When I think of soul, I do not consider it as a musical form such as jazz, blues, rock, classical, country or reggae. There are technical aspects to these styles of music that make them distinctly identifiable. Soul music is a bit different. As the name implies, it's music of the soul; music that connect with the soul. It is not the note, in my opinion that makes a music soul but the delivery, the passion and deep connection to the soul and sprit that this type of art form normally brings to bear through its soulful artists.
As far as I'm concern, in my opinion, any music of the heart,for the soul that touch the soul is soul music.
